About Us

Foundation of Hope

Rainbow Foundation of Hope is a Canadian charity registered and founded to provide financial assistance to other Canadian charities actively supporting LGBT+ Refugees and Newcomers. Operated by a working board of volunteers, FOH is the first of its kind in Canada and possibly the world. The Foundation originated as a group of individuals who co-sponsored two gay Syrian refugees to become permanent residents under resettlement as Newcomers to Canada. Through this work, the team learned that a queer refugee’s path is neither simple nor easy and that a tremendous amount of resources are needed to help people escape untold hardships.

Foundation of Hope is not a service organization and does not appeal directly or specifically to individual cases of LGBT+ persecution. Incorporated as a registered society on August 12, 2014 and having received registered charitable status in Canada on April 2, 2015, FOH is legally required to direct all its charitable contributions towards other Canadian charities. It is these charities that work directly with individual cases of LGBT+ persecution. Our mandate is to ensure broad representation exists to meet the needs of LGBT+ Refugees and Newcomers. It extends to encompass the services of unique organizations in Canada, which provide avenues for private sponsorship of LGBT+ Refugees or support services that assist newly settled migrants (i.e., Newcomers). This represents the outcome of FOH’s initial phase of what is intended to be an ongoing assessment of need for the LGBT+ Refugee and Newcomer community.

Financing charities allows FOH to address these important issues while remaining at arm’s length from individuals under persecution. We believe there are emergent benefits through a goal of collaboration and hold a broad mandate to support these initiatives, not only as a funding partner to the individual charities that align with our purpose, but also to seek out partnerships among charitable organizations that share common interests. Through such collaboration, FOH believes the broader goal to improve and expand the support network can more swiftly and effectively enable solutions to LBGT+ Refugees and Newcomers wherever they intersect.

Most importantly, this goal begins with you, the donor. For it is you that entrusts us to ensure your contributions are directed to wherever LGBT+ Refugees and Newcomers are in need. And it is incumbent upon FOH to be stewards of this generosity in a manner that is transparent and accountable, in order to achieve success as efficiently and effectively as possible.

About the Butterfly Symbol

The monarch butterfly in many circles has become a metaphor of the immigrant. It is a phenomenon of nature with an extraordinary strategy for migration. This remarkable insect flies thousands of kilometres between continents, over vast expanses of ocean, and across many borders.
